Hudson Homes Important Announcement: Engineered stone ban
As we bid farewell to 2023, we want to keep you in the loop about some important changes on the regulatory front that might impact your upcoming projects. In recent months, we’ve seen the adoption of NCC2022 provisions, BASIX energy targets, and now, the announcement of a ban on engineered stone.
Understanding Engineered Stone
Engineered stone, also known as artificial composite stone, is a man-made material crafted by combining crushed stone with a resin binder. Renowned for its durability, resistance to scratches and stains, and mimicry of natural stone aesthetics, it’s commonly used in various home applications such as splashbacks, flooring, countertops, and benchtops.
However, recent findings have highlighted potential health risks associated with the manufacturing process of engineered stone. High levels of respirable crystalline silica, released as dust during production, can pose risks to workers, leading to conditions such as silicosis.
What You Need to Know
As of December 13, 2023, a ban on the use, supply, and manufacture of engineered stone has been announced, slated to take effect from July 1, 2024. While this may cause concern, rest assured that until the ban is in place, Safe Work Australia advises that working with engineered stone can continueif done in a controlled manner, adhering to WHS regulations.
